killdeer nest in the field

We found this right in the middle of the onions this week – I was cultivating the row with our smaller tractor and somehow missed the nest! All the eggs are intact.

Killdeer are related to the piping plover (same incredibly loud “beeping” noise – you can hear it even over the roar of the tractor with ear protection on), and they nest in farm fields. Hard to understand since it’s not a very safe or quiet place for a bird! We flagged the nest and will drive around it til the eggs hatch.
